District Sides action kicks off on the Coast

by admin on May 6, 2014

Couple of upsets in the men’s field, but women’s round one goes pretty much as expected. District Sides action is underway, with the annual district-vs-district dogfight kicking off on the rainy Gold Coast this morning.
Just one round in and we already have a couple of upsets in the men’s competition.
While big guns Gold Coast A and Brisbane North came through the championship-opener unscathed, a number of other top sides have suffered unexpected defeats.
The newly formed Port Curtis District announced its intentions early in the comp, defeating Gold Coast-Tweed’s B side, 63-58.
The other half of the recently split district, Bundaberg, also flexed its muscles, clocking up a 30-shot win on Caboolture, 76-46.
North Qld suffered a three-shot loss at the hands of Central Queensland, 56-59, while Sunshine Coast went down to Cunningham, 56-60.
There were a couple of blowout wins in Round 1 also, with Gateway smashing Condamine, 93-49, Brisbane overhauling Leichhardt, 82-54, and Gold Coast A dominating Southern Down, 101-64.
In the women’s event, Round 1 went pretty much to script with almost all of the top teams coming through undefeated.
The only real upset wins of the morning were Wide Bay/Gympie’s 26-shot drubbing of Brisbane North, and Central Qld’s 31-shot defeat of Southern Downs, 74-43.

Bundaberg’s carved out a five-shot win over Downs, but that’s not such a big surprise, as Bundy has proven itself a very tough competitor in recent years.
Burnett’s 37-shot win over Leichhardt, 73-36, was the biggest win of the morning.
Action continues at clubs around the Coast this afternoon, with Round 2 currently underway and Round 3 kicking off at 2.45 pm.
Each district will play three more sectional rounds tomorrow and Friday, before breaking up for divisional round-robin finals on Saturday.
Men’s sectional play is being staged at Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach bowls clubs, with the women in action at Musgrave Hill and Southport.
