Cool cats get the cream

Purrfect result for Coolum Beach ‘cougars’, undefeated in the State Champ of Club Champion Women’s Fours. These cool cats from Coolum Beach missed out on getting into the final of the Champion of Club Champion Women’s Fours in 2013 on one shot on a measure and getting a second chance this year, they didn’t want to stuff it up!
“We want to win, make up for last time!” lead Liza Burgess said.
The Coolum Beach ‘cougars’ (Liza Burgess, Brenda Balchin, Marilyn Clayton, and skip Louise Witton) were untroubled in the final against Bribie Island, opening up a massive lead from the opening bowl and finishing 18 ends later on 32-5.
“We’re thrilled!” skip Louise Witton said. “It wasn’t an easy ride to get here but we always kept faith in each other that we could do it.”
Louise is the first to admit she’s “match fit” after helping QLD Over 60s win a national title at Australian Senior Sides Championships in WA earlier this month.
“Every game was really hard over there, it got us all very sharp, we wanted to win,” Louise said.
For No 2 Balchin and No 3 Clayton, it’s their second Champion of Club Champions title in as many years, winning the Women’s Pairs together last year.
Coolum Beach lead Liza Burgess was jumping out of her skin with excitement.
“Effing awesome!” Burgess said.
Bribie Island’s Sue Mitchell, Irene Smith (sub), Margaret James and skip Lyn Thorp were very happy with their SILVER medal.
“We’re delighted to be here, the best thing about this competition is the cameraderie, we never criticise each other, we couldn’t be happier with the silver,” Thorp said.
“Coolum are a great competitive team, we knew to expect a tough competition and it was.”
The BRONZE medal went to West Toowoomba’s Jan Thomas, Denise Parkinson (sub), Lorraine Blaine and Imelda Brumpton, Denise coming into the team for skip Tracy Foster who was unable to play, and Imelda moving to skip.
“We’re thrilled, over the moon,” said Brumpton. “How well did our super sub play!”
Mareeba Memorial’s Carmen Cobb, Theresa Pin, Eileen Stevens, and skip Sue Brady were placed fourth, out-played by West Toowoomba for the Bronze medal, 27-20, 21 ends, but they didn’t stop fighting.
“We’re quite happy with the way we played, every game we were in it until the end,” Cobb said.
