Who’s on the top rung?
Sunshine Coast & Brisbane North men, Gold Coast Tweed & Cunningham women are section leaders after two days and six rounds. Going into the final day of sectional play at Bowls Queensland District Sides 2016 (Fri May 6), it is congested at the top of the men’s and women’s ladders.
Section A Men (at Tweed Heads Bowls Club tomorrow, Fri May 6) has Sunshine Coast and Mackay districts top of the section on 12 points each, with Sunshine Coast enjoying a close three shot margin.
On their shoulder, Gold Coast Tweed ‘yellow’, Port Curtis and Fraser Coast, all on 10 points, but the host district has a 110-shot margin over nearest threat Port Curtis.
At the end of six rounds, the order is Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Gold Coast Tweed ‘yellow’, Port Curtis, Fraser Coast, Brisbane, Tropical Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Southern Downs, North West Queensland, Leichhardt, Maranoa Warrego.
Section B Men (at Coolangatta Bowls Club tomorrow, Fri May 6) has a deserving Brisbane North on top of the ladder on 12 points, ahead of Gold Coast Tweed ‘teal’ and Gateway on 10 points.
At the end of six rounds, the order is Brisbane North, Gold Coast Tweed ‘teal’, Gateway, Downs, Cunningham, Condamine, Bundaberg, Caboolture, Central Queensland, Burnett.
“When you think about what they’ve got to choose from compared to us, Brisbane North are doing really well, they were two evenly matched teams last night, and we lost by just one shot,” GCT president Brian Marshall said, a keen supporter of Gold Coast bowlers wherever they’re playing.
“Of course, our ideal scenario is Gold Coast Tweed ‘yellow’ playing Gold Coast Tweed ‘teal’ in the Division One final…”
Birthday boy Michael Keegan formerly of Kawana couldn’t have been happier, spending this year’s anniversary today (Thurs May 5) playing District Sides for his new district Gold Coast Tweed ‘yellow’.
Section A Women (at South Tweed Bowls Club tomorrow, Fri May 6) Gold Coast Tweed have assumed their customary position at the top of the ladder, on the same points (10 points) as Brisbane North women, followed by Wide Bay/Gympie, Brisbane, Mackay, Sunshine Coast, Gateway, Burnett, Port Curtis and Leichhardt.
Section B Women (at Twin Towns Bowls Club tomorrow, Fri May 6) Cunningham is on the top rung, but sharing the lead on 10 points with Downs and Caboolture, followed by Bundaberg, Central Queensland, North Queensland, Tropical Far North Queensland, Maranoa Warrego, Southern Downs and Condamine.

Three more rounds will be held tomorrow (Fri May 6) and then the top four districts for both men and women will play off against each other in the Division One final at Tweed Heads on Sat May 7. (The next top four will play Div 2 final, also at Tweed Heads, then Div 3 at Coolangatta, Div 4 at South Tweed and Div 5 Twin Towns.)
