Champ of Champs has begun and seen major upsets for our own in singles
Sectional results in the singles show rough losses for Helen Annan, and a shocking withdrawal from Colin Kelly.
Queensland singles representative at the National Champion of Champions event has been forced to withdraw his place in the competition.
On Sunday October 12, Colin Kelly of Cairns Bowls Club was admitted to Cairns hospital for a yet undiagnosed illness.
National Champion of champions began today at Taren Point Bowls Club in New South Wales and a replacement could not be found, Bowls Queensland wish Colin all the best.
Queensland’s now solo women’s representative in the singles, Helen Annan of Deception Bay had a rough ride this morning losing all three games in her section.
Annan, now in her seventies lost in the opening round against South Australia’s Sue Coultas, 21-16.
The former pairs champion was hoping for a better result in the second round against Tasmania’s Mary Beaumont but was left disappointed with the 21-10 result.
In the final round against the Australian Capital Territory’s Margaret Bacchetto, Annan lost 21-11.
The men and women’s singles finals will take place tomorrow morning at 9am, unfortunately Queenslander Annan missing out.
Tomorrow the pairs competition kicks off, and Queensland’s teams have a whole lot of heart.
Competing from Bundaberg’s Tantitha Bowls Club are Steven McNamee and Jason Andrewartha.
They qualified last year, but since then their club suffered major flood damage with an expected recovery cost of $480,000, it has since been shut down.
The men will be out to win as a last hurrah for their hometown club, open for 73 years before the doors were forced shut.
Defending pairs champions Jo Worsley and Tracy Foster of West Toowoomba will contest the ladies title.
