Scottish champ takes out first round
World number eight Graeme Archer has stormed to a straight sets victory
The men’s singles have gotten off to a spectacular start with the world number eight, Scotland’s Graeme Archer, storming to a straight sets victory against Rod Werner in the opening round.
Archer who accepted a wildcard entry into this year’s Open, barely stepped out of first gear collecting 3 on the opening end, on way to a 9-6 first set win.
The second set began in the Scottish champion’s favour, where he again claimed 3 in the first end. His good form continued, claiming 4 on the fourth which saw him breeze home to victory, winning 13-2.
The next round will see Archer up against Neville Rodda. Rodda, one half of last year’s men’s pairs champions, won in a tie-breaker against Angus MacIsaac. Rodda dominated in the first set winning 11-5.
MacIsaac rebounded to take out the second set claiming 3 at the first end. However, Rodda put up a brave fight claiming 4 at the sixth end yet he couldn’t stem the tide, losing the set 6-8. It eventually came down to the tie-breaker where Rodda proved too good for MacIsaac, taking out a clean 6-0 victory.
The morning also proved fortunate for Rodda’s partner in last year’s pairs victory, Lee Schraner, who dispatched his opponent, Lance Bradshaw, with ease, 10-2, 11-1.
