Carriage and Armitage take out first round
Australian captain Lynsey Armitage defeated Kay Moran yesterday
While there were some major shocks in round one of the women’s singles draw yesterday a number of the Australian squad made it through to the next round.
Recently inducted Australian Squad representative Kate Carriage proved she was all class, defeating Northern Territory’s Patricia Ledsham 8-9, 11-3, 3-1.
Fellow Australian Squad representative Claire Duke proved too strong against her opponent Jenny Tirant, defeating the Victorian in comfortable straight sets to progress through the opening rounds draw, 14-4, 9-7.
Across the greens Club Helensvale powerhouse Lynsey Armitage defeated Scottish International Kay Moran, with a thrilling straight sets display10-6, 7-7.
Armitage now looms ominously in the women’s singles draw and would be looking to capitalise on this year’s Grand Prix silverware after the causalities of round one.
In other games Australian A-Squad representative Julie Keegan got through her opening round encounter unscathed against Lisa Featherby.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games Silver medallist took an early lead in the first set, but battled it out in the second to ultimately register 9-3, 8-8 on the scoreboard.
Last year’s Australian Open triples champion Anne Johns made light work of her opponent Kerry Andersen, taking just over an hour to prevail 10-1, 10-2.
Victorian’s Carla Odgers had some competition on her hands during her opening round set in the form of Queensland’s Yvonne Lovelock, but comfortably got through the second set to take her opening round match out in straight sets 9-8, 11-1.
The action from the women’s singles draw continues with round three taking centre stage from 3pm tomorrow at the Darebin International Sports Centre.
