Men’s trips seek revenge

Men's triples semifinals decided
2/22/2012

The stars were shining brightly at Darebin International Sports centrewhen the male triples contingent of Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Barrie Lester, Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallist Wayne Turley and 2012 International and Male Bowler of the year Aron Sherriff rolled their way through to the semifinals in straight sets.

In the first, the tournament heavyweights dominated until the fourth end where they collected 13 shots against WA’s Matt Ellul and the two Victorians Rhett Butler and Thomas Mitchell. Yet their opponents dug in and minimised the damage by scoring five shots in the last four ends while Lester, Turley and Sherriff were unable to score any leaving the final score 13-5.

The second set saw Ellul, Butler and Mitchell continue their form running away with two shots in the first two ends and restricting their opponents to none. Yet after collecting four in the third end the formidable trio rebounded and didn’t falter again scoring eight in the final five ends to score a comfortable 12-6 win.

The victory earnt them a berth in tomorrow’s semifinal against NSW’s Bruce Lack, Matt Thompson and Tim Farrell. The trio will be looking to seek revenge after Lack, Thompson and Farrell defeated them in the third round of last year's NSW Open to deny them a place in the quarter-final.

Revenge would be sweet, but Lack, Thompson and Farrell are in exceptional form after beating Victoria’s Russell Green, world number one Leif Selby and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Nathan Rice and will be hard to beat. They stormed home to victory in their quarter final match against the three heavyweights, which in the end was decided in a tie-breaker won 2-1 by the New South Welshman.

Across the greens, Victoria’s Glen Baudinette, Paul Morris and Ian Warner defeated the ACT’s Damon Jeffery, Andrew Howie and David Holt 5-1 in a tie-break finish. They will be up against Victoria’s Ray Lawerson, James Pearce and Alan Dove who comfortably earned a two set victory 11-3, 10-4 against Queenslanders Michael Keegan, Greg Brown and Lee Fitzhenry.
