Queenslander Maree Gibbs from Millmerran is the silver medallist in the Australian Open 2015 Women’s Singles. Winner is Ellen Ryan from Cabramatta NSW. Millmerran’s Maree Gibbs, 58, had the time of her life at the Australian Open Women’s Singles final today.
“Who’d have thought, a country girl, an old girl, no coach, to end up in the final of the Australian Open, never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d get this far,” Gibbs said.
Trophy winner was another country girl, Ellen Ryan, just 18 years old and recently moved from Goulburn to Cabramatta to further her bowls.
Ellen is current NSW Junior Female Champion Bowler of the Year.
“It’s the most exciting result, it’s my first time on TV, that was exciting,” Ryan said.
Both girls had very close encounters on their way to the final.
Ellen goes home with an impressive $16,000 pay check, Maree $8,000.
