Clive and Tony team up for Pairs
2013 State Multi Disability Champs, Aspley Fresh from his Eight Nations international experience, Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association bowler Tony Bonnell from Pine Rivers is ready to tackle this year’s State Multi Disability Championships at Aspley, running from September 8-12.
The Bowler magazine caught up with Bonnell at the opening ceremony, less than 24 hours after he’d stepped off a plane from England.
“It was an amazing experience, to be part of the Australian team playing in Glasgow,” Bonnell said.
“We played Triples and came fourth out of eight nations, just missing out on the bronze.
“Scotland were very good on their home turf, taking the gold and bronze in our event, and South Africa got the silver.
Bonnell said the greens didn’t run as slowly as the team had been warned, running about 12 seconds, when they were expecting 8-10 seconds.
Bonnell will play singles at the 2013 Queensland Multi Disability State Championships and team up for pairs with Maryborough Services star Clive Williams.
Both grew up in Cooroy on the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
Bonnell is hoping to be included in two further training camps before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in August 2014, with the hope of being a final selection in the Australian bowls team.
It will be the first time disability bowls has been included in a Commonwealth Games.
