Coast girls chasing District Sides glory

by admin on May 7, 2014

After three high tempo rounds, just three teams remain undefeated in the women’s District Sides Championships. Bowling big guns Gold Coast-Tweed and Sunshine Coast are leading the field after Round 3 of the 2014 Women’s District Sides Championships.
But while the dominance of coast sides won’t surprise anyone, the emergence of Wide Bay/Gympie as a real contender for the title might.
The Wide Bay girls kicked off their campaign with a shock 61-35 drubbing of Brisbane North, and they haven’t looked back, despatching an impressive Downs side, 43-38, before ending Central Qld’s unbeaten run in Round 3, 49-33.
The side’s real test will come tomorrow, when they take on Section B heavyweights Sunshine Coast in Round 5, but as it stands they’re well placed to give the Sunny Coast girls a real run for their money.
It was a good first day on the greens for Sunshine Coast today, with the reigning champs taking down North Qld, 56-37, Bundaberg 55-50 and Condamine 72-32, to top the section heading into day two.
The only other undefeated team in the comp is Gold-Coast Tweed, who currently lead the field in Section A.
The three-time champions (and last year’s runner-up) swept aside all before them on Day 1, Caboolture 64-37, Port Curtis 56-18 and Maranoa/Warrego 105-18.
Brisbane, Burnett, Cunningham, Mackay and Tropical Far North aren’t far off the pace however, all with two wins apiece in Section A, while Central Qld, Gateway, Brisbane North and Bundaberg are 2 from 3 in Section B.
With just two teams from each section going through to Division 1 finals, it will be a real dogfight tomorrow as sides begin to feel the heat.
