Back to earth with a bang

Mackay and Tropical Far North may have put a premature end to Gold Coast Tweed’s District Sides title bid. Gold Coast-Tweed were brought back to earth with a bump today, going down to Mackay and Tropical Far North, and slipping to third in Section A at the 2014 women’s District Sides Championships.
The Goldie girls had been hot favourites to top Section A and secure a Division 1 berth following a dominant display on Day 1.
But Mackay had other ideas, running the three-time champs to the wire, before eking out a narrow one-shot win, 51-50.
Things went from bad to worse after the break, with Tropical Far North clocking up and 11-shot win over the Gold Coast’s star-studded side, 46-35.
That loss saw Mackay leapfrog Gold Coast into second place, and with Maranoa/Warrego (10th), Caboolture (7th) and Leichhardt (9th) on the cards tomorrow, it may well have sealed Mackay’s spot in Division 1.
Cunningham currently tops Section A after clocking up wins over Brisbane (46-41), Burnett (72-34) and Port Curtis (61-45).
However, a Round 8 clash with Gold Coast tomorrow may well throw a spanner in the works for Cunningham, as a loss would leave the teams level on match points and right now Gold Coast have by far the bigger shots margin (217 vs 79).
Meanwhile in Section B, Sunshine Coast’s campaign remains on track, with the Sunny girls the only undefeated team in the women’s competition.
Wins over Downs (67-33), Wide Bay/Gympie (63-36) and Southern Downs (77-33) sees them safely through to Day 3 at the top of the table.
Tomorrow is set to be a tougher day however, with fourth-place Central Queensland and third-place Gateway coming up in rounds 7 and 9.
Bundaberg also came through Day 2 undefeated, beating Central Qld (58-51), Condamine (95-21) and Brisbane North (45-35) to sit second on the ladder.
The Bundy girls also have a tough day tomorrow, with rivals Gateway and Wide Bay/Gympie up in rounds 7 and 9.
With Gateway and Wide Bay just one match-win behind Bundaberg, they’ll be determined to knock the Bundy girls off their perch.
