Big four on track for Division 1 showdown

by admin on May 8, 2014

With just three rounds to go, Queensland top district teams are starting to pull away at the top of the leader board. After six sensational rounds at the 2014 men’s District Sides Championships, only four sides remain undefeated and on track for a Division 1 berth.
Gold Coast-Tweed, Gateway, Bundaberg and Cunningham all came through Day 2 unscathed, with Gateway and Cunningham topping Section 1, while Gold Coast and Bundaberg lead the field in Section 2.
Tomorrow’s Round 9 clash is shaping up as a preview for the Division 1 finals, with these four powerhouse sides going head-to-head for supremacy in their sections.
Reigning champs Brisbane North (Section B) are still in the hunt for Division 1, as is Sunshine Coast (Section A), with both sides just one win off the leaders.
However, the Brissy boys would have to overhaul Gold Coast A in tomorrow’s Round 8 match to be in with a shot, and that’s a big ask, with the Goldie boys blazing a trail through this year’s championships.
Sunshine Coast has better odds in Section A, with North Qld (10th), Gold Coast B (5th) and Leichhardt (11th) looming on Day 3.
If the Sunny Coast boys can win their three remaining sectional games, they’ll be on equal match points with the loser of tomorrow’s Round 9 clash between Gateway and Cunningham (assuming those sides don’t slip up before Rnd 9).
Men’s District Sides action continues at Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach bowls club tomorrow at 9am, with divisional play-off at clubs around the Coast on Saturday.
