Former champs closing in on title
Four fantastic former champs have made it through to the women’s 2014 State Singles quarter-finals Seven former champions kicked-off post-sectionals in the 2014 Women’s State Singles at Broadbeach Bowls Club this morning.
But by the time the sun set over Queensland’s glitter strip, only four were left standing.
Maria Rigby, Ann-Maree Peart, Lyn Cuthbertson and Lynsey Clarke are all through to tomorrow’s quarter-finals at Broadbeach, where they’re hoping to once again inscribe their name on the coveted singles trophy.
They’ll be joined in the quarters by seasoned Queensland reps Sammie Wilson, Yvonne Lovelock and Christina Pavlov, and veteran Kawana campaigner Faye Clarke.
Absent from the line-up is 2013 singles champ Marilyn Emerton, who went down to Pavlov in post-sectionals, 25-21.
2012 champ Jenny Blundell also failed to make the cut, going down to Natasha Jones, 17-25, before Jones herself was dumped out by 2007 singles winner Lynsey Clarke, 25-8.
Meanwhile, Lovelock was responsible for knocking off two-time winner Gail Waitai, defeating the 2005/2010 champ 25-22 for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Unlike Peart, Cuthbertson and Clarke, who each have one singles title to their name, Rigby is gunning for her third State Singles crown, having won the title in 1995 and again in 2000.
