Junior championships open in Bundaberg

Fours battle for top spot on first day Seventy of the state’s finest young bowlers fired the first shots in eight days’ of battle today (Wednesday, 8 April) with the opening rounds of the 2015 State Junior Championships in Bundaberg.
 About 60 spectators gathered at the Burnett Bowls Club to watch the opening rounds of the Under 18 Open Fours as the youngsters played through three games, broken into four sections, to find tomorrow’s four semi-final teams.
 The quality of the first rounds promises even more exciting games tomorrow (Thursday, April 9) when the best from each of the four sections clash in the semi-finals, with the successful two competing in the final later in the day.
 In one of the semi-final games, section one winners Liam Stephan (lead), Justin Cribbin (second), Dale McWhinney-Shillington (third) and Tyler Pettigrew (skip)  will take on the best from section two –  Nathan Earle (lead), Tegan Wilson (second), Kalib Morgan (third) and Kane Nelson (skip).
 The other semi-final will see section three’s Jake Rynne (lead), Mitchell Mears (second), Jesse Turnbull (third) and Hayden Vogler (skip) compete against section four’s Carl Flegler (lead), Shane Rideout (second), Bradley Flegler (third) and Brittanny Wiley (skip) for a spot in tomorrow afternoon’s final.

 The championships will continue all week, with the under 18 boys pairs, the under 18 girls pairs and the under 19 combined pairs playing on April 10 and 11; the open triples on April 12 and 13; and the under 18 boys singles, under 18 girls singles, under 15 boys single and under 15 girls singles played on April 14.
 All but the girls’ singles will be played at Burnett Bowls Club, with those games played at nearby Across the Waves Bowls Club.
