Nine dazzle on carpet
Ken Emura, Paul Girdler, Jason Carpenter, Robbie Wild, Jude Whaites, Charlie Harkness, Lynsey Clarke, Kristy Thatcher and June Beverley make the cut for AI 2015. Nine Queenslanders will be after the King and Queen of Carpet titles on offer at the upcoming 2015 Australian Indoor Bowls Championships, to be held at Tweed Heads in August.
Jude Whaites (Kawana), Charlie Harkness (Helensvale), Lynsey Clarke (Helensvale), Kristy Thatcher (Tweed Heads) and June Beverley (Greenslopes) were successful during the women’s rounds held on the Gold Coast on May 23.
The men, Ken Emura (Tweed Heads), Paul Girdler (Tweed Heads), Jason Carpenter (Helensvale) and Robert Wild (Pine Rivers), secured their spots in the national competition on the weekend of April 18 and 19.
The women’s qualifying finals saw Beverley defeat Bolivia Millerick (Caloundra) 8-7, 9-6, Thatcher defeat Karen Pickering (Musgrave Hill) 10-2, 7-6; Clarke defeat Dee-Ann Robertson (West Cairns) 10-5, 6-8, 5-2; Harkness defeat Christine Baxter (Mount Gravatt) 8-11, 9-4, 4-2; and Whaites defeat Debbie Logan (Mount Gravatt) 7-6, 7-10, 6-0.
In April, Emura defeated Dave Bennett (South Tweed) 8-4, 10-6, Girdler defeated Mark Baker (Tugun) 12-2, 12-7, Carpenter defeated Eric Copeland (Broadbeach) 7-5, 9-7 and Wild defeated Peter Thompson (Paradise Point) 11-8, 7-2.
The Australian Indoor Championships will be held at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club from August 24 to 27, 2015.
