Mixed result in U18 series
Both QLD and NSW trialled new faces in the annual U18 clash (July 3-5) at Tugun Bowls Club. Queensland’s new look U18 girls team Jessie Cottell (Broadbeach), Rebecca Rixon (Kawana), Jessica Srisamruaybai (Tweed Heads), Shervawn Wilson (Tin Can Bay) and Julia Allen-Best (Tin Can Bay) performed as a well oiled machine in the just completed test clash against NSW (July 3-5, Tugun), finishing the annual test series undefeated, three tests to nil (3-0).
The Queensland boys Jayden Christie (Helensvale), Jacob Nelson (Belmont), Dale McWhinney-Shillington (Musgrave Hill), Shane White (Helensvale), Nicky Cahill (Bargara) were not able to turn some strong performances on the green into a series win, managing to draw the second test but going down in the first and third test, for a 0-2 series result.
The U18 QLD state team is building towards defending its national title won in the ACT last year, with the 2016 Australian U18 Championships coming up in South Australia in October (Oct 1-3).
“With some newies here representing Queensland for the first time, there were some nerves as well as the pressure of playing a test series,” Queensland state coach Bill Cornehls said.
“The girls especially finished strongly.”
“There wasn’t a lot between the games and both NSW and QLD have some new players in their sides,” NSW manager Sharyn Renshaw said.
“The NSW side is used to training and working together, I think compatibility is one of the big things and we’ve built up a good culture in NSW over the past few years so they know what’s expected of them which is our biggest strength.”
