It was a successful opening day for Queensland’s 60+ women at the 2016 Australian Senior Sides Championships at Osborne Park, Western Australia, as the defending champs took charge in their first game against Victoria winning 66-50.
With strong winds on the rinks, it was a real battle early on with not much between the two sides, but the Maroons managed to hold on to their small lead and persevere to increase their shot margin to 16.
Skip Christina Pavlov’s efforts for her team earned her the top spot on the Bowls Australia skip leader-board from Round 1, holding a two shot lead (1 +18) over second placed skip Mina Bannerman (1+16) from the ACT.
The QLD 60+ men’s side also put in a strong showing against Victoria in Round 1, the two old rivals neck and neck for most of a gladatorial showdown, unfortunately the southerners were able to open up a 10-shot margin by the close, 62-52.
The Kookaburras take on the team everyone likes to beat, New South Wales, in Round 2 today (Tues Oct 11).
