by admin on April 25, 2017

English bowlers targeting Commonwealth Games selection are in QLD this week and next to play some high level teams. Australian Jackaroos on debut against England show off their new representative caps: Ellen Ryan (Women’s Cap No 84), Scott Thulborn (Men’s Cap No 143) and Corey Wedlock (Men’s Cap No 144)
England will spend the next 11 days training on Queensland’s Gold Coast as part of the squad’s preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The busy visit includes a three day official test series with the Australian Jackaroos (starting today) and matches against quality Gold Coast club sides and three State Development teams.

Broadbeach is the host club for the much anticipated test series between the two powerhouse countries England and Australia.
All players in both squads will be trying to impress selectors, with the squads to be whittled down to representative teams over the coming months to decide who will be the chosen few to take to the greens for their countries.

After the Australia V England three day Test Series, a further six days of quality competition has been arranged for the England touring party, including two days against Broadbeach Bowls Club bowlers, a day taking on Queensland’s Development Team, a hit out against the powerhouse Club Helensvale, and finally, two days to take on the NSW/ACT NTC Squad.

National assistant coach Gary Willis has selected a strong NSW/ACT NTC squad line-up which includes former Australian Jackaroos, Australian Under-18 and Development players and current NSW/ACT State representatives.

2015 Australian Open Singles Champion Aaron Teys will spearhead their side along with teenage super star Jono Davis.

The NSW/ACT NTC Squad have been practicing for their challenge against England at their Centre of Excellence, Cabramatta Bowling Club in Sydney’s West.

Another formidable challenger will come from the Broadbeach locals who have forged a strong line-up for their two days of action against the visiting nation.

Current and former internationals, Ryan Bester (Canada), Katelyn Inch (New Zealand), Chloe Stewart (Australia) and Julie Keegan (Australia) all call Broadbeach home; whilst a host of young talent have followed to play out of the home of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Club Helensvale have a star studded line-up headlined by Australian Jackaroos Captain Lynsey Clarke and former Australian representative Anthony Kiepe.

Off the back of Queensland’s recent success at the Australian Sides Championships, Bowls Queensland have appointed to their challenge against England QLD skips Julie Keegan and Bolivia Millerick along with Jessica Srisamruaybai and Chloe Stewart for their one day hit out on May 2.

These six days of competition are not only great preparation for England but a chance for local bowlers to get their taste of what international competition is all about.

The teams will battle it out in singles, pairs, triples and fours so check out the schedule and get down to Broadbeach and Club Helensvale if you can find a window to cheer on the next batch of Australian stars and check out the English style.
