Pine Rivers hosts 14 high school pairs in this weekend’s Bowls QLD Secondary Schools Cup State Final 2017. There was no sleep in on first day of the school holidays for the 14 pairs of state finalists in the 2017 Bowls QLD Secondary Schools Cup.
The action kicked off at Club Pine Rivers at 9am on Saturday September 16 and the final will be held early afternoon tomorrow (Sunday September 17)
The 14 schools represented at state finals weekend are:
Mercy College Mackay,
Ipswich Grammar School,
Mount Larcom SHS,
Mount Morgan SHS,
Chisholm Catholic College (Logan),
Siena Catholic College (Buderim),
Longreach SHS,
Emmaus College (Rockhampton),
Gympie SHS,
Charters Towers SHS,
Wavell SHS,
Burnett State College (Gayndah),
Tagai State College (Thursday Island),
Roma SHS.
The students have come supported by proud parents, teachers and members of their supporting bowls clubs.
Helping run the weekend event for the students are Pine Rivers staff and officials, including president Dave Antney, bowls coordinator Des Wilson, umpires Doug and Ann Heidke.
Bowls AUST Regional Bowls Manager Andrew Howie (RBM for SEQ) attended the opening ceremony.
Bowls QLD president Peter Williamson and BQ Match official Nev Galbraith have been keeping scores updated at Club Pine Rivers.
The students play against each other in 10 gruelling rounds of nine ends, three bowl pairs.
In a nod to the popular “BPL” format, each team gets to nominate a “power play” end in every match, which must be declared before the first bowl is rolled; if they successfully take the end, they get double points.
(Events coordinator Roxanne Bell will publish the results at the end of the day on the BQ website EVENTS page, link below.)
BQ media’s Tom Sharman will attend the final round tomorrow and get some photos of the presentation ceremony for Queensland Bowler magazine, which will be in clubs late September/early October.
BQ media’s Naomi Cescotto attended today’s opening ceremony to take photos of the state finalists, which can be found on Bowls QLD Facebook page (Photos, Albums – Photos can be made available to clubs and students in early October, email media@bowlsqld.org if you would like photos of your team sent through.)
Good luck to all state finalists for a successful weekend, whether on the scoreboard, making new friends or just enjoying playing a new sport at a higher level.
