Country kids bag their first cup win

Longreach High School’s Drew Young and Ty Jesberg were elated to have won the 2017 Secondary School Cup title after two long days of bowling at Pine Rivers Bowls Club (September 16-17).

Over the 10 Rounds played both Drew and Ty managed to maintain a clean sheet with nine wins and one draw against Tagai State School’s Cohen Nichols and Joshua Collier.

“It was really good fun and I really enjoyed the competition,” 13-year-old Ty Jesberg said.

“It was both our first time in the Schools Cup but we really enjoyed it and want to come back again if we can next year to have a go at trying to win it again.”

This year’s runners-up was Burnett College’s Rebekah Adams and Brittanny Wiley who finished with nine wins and one loss to the eventual title winners Young and Jesberg.

This year’s competition featured 14 schools in  state finals weekend which were Mercy College Mackay, Ipswich Grammar School, Mount Larcom SHS, Mount Morgan SHS, Chisholm Catholic College (Logan), Siena Catholic College (Buderim), Longreach SHS, Emmaus College (Rockhampton), Gympie SHS, Charters Towers SHS, Wavell SHS, Burnett State College (Gayndah), Tagai State College (Thursday Island) and Roma SHS.

The 2017 Secondary School Cup’s Top Three Teams:

Longreach High School – Drew Young & Ty Jesberg

Burnett College – Rebekah Adams & Brittanny Wiley

Sienna Catholic College – Callum Noble & Rebecca Rixon
