Helensvale Hawks win men’s and women’s state titles

After a hotly contested match the State Pennant Men’s and Women’s Title has been won by Helensvale. In a match for the ages the Helensvale Hawks has taken both Men’s and Women’s State Pennants against the Enoggera Eagles.
The Eagles fell agonisingly short of capturing the Pennant against the Hawks as the Helensvale side emerged victorious.
The men’s match was tight throughout and came down to the last two bowls in an extra end shootout. A shot by Enoggera’s Ryan Digby ended in the ditch which allowed for the Hawks to claim their second title in 3 years.
Brendan Egan from the Enoggera Eagles said the team was happy to make the final and hopes to build on this in the future,
“Getting that close against one of the best sides in the country, to go an extra end, stoked really,” he said.
“We’re definitely heading in the right direction we’re gonna be ultra-competitive.”
With the Eagles in a rebuilding phase Emma Spicer said this is a great sign for the future.
“This is a really good start so we hope to get better,” she said.
“We had some inexperienced girls and they held it together in the final, it’s good.”
The women’s side ended 65-63 with Commonwealth Gold Medalist Kelsey Cottrell bowling a sharp shot right at the jack which effectively sealed the win for the Helensvale. It was the women’s second title since 2004 and a sweet victory after being runner ups in 2016.
Helensvale’s Pamela Fantini said that despite a slow start in the morning the team had more than enough to get the win.
“It’s such a hard fought effort, we all dug deep,” she said.
“You can never be down and out that’s never the Hawkies or Queensland spirit.”
