Marlin Coast Women Proud to be at Pennants
By Colleen Thompson
Whilst our women were unsuccessful in winning the State Pennant Finals in Tweed Heads last month, the Marlin Coast Bowls Club were very proud of their achievement in earning their way to the finals.
Clubs in Far North Queensland are often small and to have won the District Finals, the Zone Playoffs and to progress to the State Finals was incredible. The strong winds at Tweed Heads were challenging but these women, with an average age of 71 years, are stayers and even when the odds were against them, they carried on and played their hearts out.
Four of our women played in the Fours at Toowoomba the end of October after playing their way into the Champion of Club Champions.
Trish played in the Ladies A Grade Singles Champion of Club Champions, then a few days later played in the State Pennant Finals.
All these ladies hail from one small club tucked away in the Northern Beaches of Cairns.
I must also add that to participate in these events it costs money, lots of money. The Cairns Mayor’s Discretionary fund kindly donated $500 as did the Trinity Beach Tavern.
We were very grateful for these donations. The bulk of the costs were raised by the ladies themselves with fundraisers such as Breaky and Bowls, a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, a Cent Sale, selling of homemade lollies and many, many raffles.
