The laws of the sport of bowls – a refresher – placing the mat
Umpire with Joan Brotherton
During some of the events I have attended in the past months, I noticed some of the following laws have not been observed and I would like to remind members that it is important that we all play by the laws of the sport of bowls.
Law 6: Placing the Mat
6.1. At the start of each end:
- 6.1.1 Before the start of play in each end, the player to play first must place the centre line of the mat lengthwise along the centre line of the rink, with the mat line at least 2 metres from the rear ditch and at least 25 metres from the front ditch.
It is important that if the Lead has been requested by the Skip to place the mat at the 2 metre mark that is exactly where the mat should be placed at the 2 metre mark.
This is illustrated on Page 10 – B.4.2 G – 2 metres – minimum distance of the mat line from the rear ditch.
