Green on the green for St Patrick’s Day
By Geoff Davis
St Patrick’s Day was celebrated at the Southern Cross Bowls Club in Warwick with a great bowls day for anyone and everyone, generously sponsored by resident Irishman Valentine Gray.
Amongst the 42 bowlers were some of Val’s family, local novice bowlers, as well as club members who were ready to help out with a bit of guidance (not always helpful). Some bowlers showed some real potential by shouting at the bar.
Most people made the effort to get dressed up in the Irish theme, however, some thought it was good enough just to drink Guinness. It was definitely hard to concentrate on the bowls with more than a few colourful characters capturing your attention on the green. Winners of the bowls and runners-up were drawn out of the “paddy cap” and there was an endless number of raffle prize winners that took home chocolates and wine. Best dressed male and female were each awarded $50.
After things slowed down, time came for some good old Irish Stew, another brew and reflect on a great afternoon of bowls fun … to be sure!
