State Championships – Women’s & Men’s Triples Champions Crowned

After two days of competitive play the 2023 Queensland State Championship Triples winners have been decided with both the men’s and women’s Gold Medallists taking out the top spot for the first time.

The women’s Gold Medal game was close and after 25 ends the scores were even at 25/25. An extra end was played with the trio from Hamilton comprising Wendy Wilson, Gail Crompton and Lauren Schultz taking out the Gold 28/25.

Skip Wendy Wilson said it was a “cracker of a game which could have gone any way.”

“We were literally shot for shot all the way through… we had to play an extra end!”

Wendy said the game play was to just get through despite the conditions.

“The greens are beautiful, but that wind was onto us today, it was making it very tricky and very temperamental.”

The “good mates” on and off the green intend to come back next year and make it a back-to-back win, that’s after three of the four are joined by their fourth to play in the women’s fours over the next three days.

The men’s triple winners, ‘The Pelicans’ hailing from Musgrave Hill at Southport were surprised to make it to the final day of play and had only played as a triple on three separate occasions before.

The trio of Peter Brown, Dean Drummond and Roger Stevens said it was a case of having absolutely no expectations which seemed to do well for the trio on the final day of play.

“This was the first year that we had played in the triples,” Roger said.

“We just scraped through yesterday and we had really tough games and this final game was our biggest win.”

“We got better with every game,” Peter said.

The Pelicans took out the gold 24/11 against the Helensvale Hawks from the Gold Coast who comprised Isaac Maughan, Gary Gilligan and Jason Constable.

Bowls Queensland thank the major sponsors, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Councillor Maria Suarez who was present for the presentations and Nic Fisher from Harcourts. A huge thanks to the Coolum Beach Bowls Club who have been great hosts throughout the championships and the other Sunshine Coast clubs who have hosted games.
