Bowls QLD Secondary Schools Cup Winners Crowned
James Nash State High School’s (Gympie) Slater Mason and Riley Gerick have won the 2023 QLD Secondary Schools Cup, winning eight games out of nine to claim the title. This is the third title in a row for the School after Riley’s brother Cody skippered the last two winning teams with Tilah Mason in 2021 and Madelyn McDonald in 2022.
Slater and Riley had a scare in round four when they lost to Stretton State College, dropping them down the ladder from the top position. They steadied to win the remainder of their games and with some results going their way, they took the title.
Stretton State College’s (Brisbane) Noah McCandless and Thomas Brehmer finished a close second also on eight wins, a margin of 28 shots separated the top two teams. The Stretton pair were leading the field after defeating James Nash until they lost on the last end of round six to North Mackay’s Charlotte McGuinness and Taylor Fisher.
Local favourites St Benedict’s College (Mango Hill, Brisbane) finished third with seven wins and Fraser Coast Anglican College’s Ethan Reid and Cooper Sutton finished in fourth with six wins plus 37.
