Serena & Tony Bonnell Win Gold in Australian Para Singles

by Bowls QLD

The Australian Para Nationals have been run and won in Perth with husband-and-wife duo of Tony and Serena Bonnell claiming Gold in their respective Singles events.

After winning Gold in the Women’s Open Pairs yesterday, teammates Serena Bonnell and Louise Hoskins then went head-to-head in the Women’s Open Singles Final. Louise gained the upper hand early to lead 12-8 before a comeback from Serena drew level at 12 all. The pair then drew level again at 15 all before Serena snuck over the line by 1 shot to claim Gold 16-15. A thrilling final that could have gone either way and a credit to both players.

Tony Bonnell then took to the green in the B5/6 Men’s Singles final against Victorian Greg Toy. After a see sawing start the pair were locked at 9 all before Tony took the lead and snuck away. Greg fought hard but Tony steadied and finished off strong to win 21-15.

Cooper Whitestyles went down in the B7/8 Men’s Singles Semi Final to eventual winner Chris Flavel from South Australia 9-21.

Our Queensland team claimed the Overall Best Performed State in a great team effort over the four days, battling heat and health issues during the event (Women: Annette Goldsworthy, Cheryl Lindfield, Louise Hoskins, Serena Bonnell; Men: Tony Bonnell, Brett Sellars, Clive Williams, Cooper Whitestyles, Bernie Wolland and Wesley Brown). Serena Bonnell was also awarded Player of The Championships. Thank you to QLD Team Managers/Coaches Alan Thorp, Dennis O’Toole and carers who assisted our team, also to all the volunteers at the Warwick Bowling Club in Perth. Well done to all medal winners and Bowls Australia on another great Para Nationals Championships.
