Pialba and Club Tweed win Champion of Champion Pairs GOLD back-to-back!!

by Bowls QLD

At Souths Suburban Bowls Club, Mackay

Pialba’s Mark Armstrong & Nic Gosley and Club Tweed’s Claire Turley & Lynsey Clarke have achieved a rare feat of back-to-back QLD State Champion of Champion Club Pairs titles. Not many players ever win this title twice, let along two years in a row which is a credit to both teams.

Mark and Nic defeated Club Kawana’s Geoff Harrison and Kurt Brown 21-13 in the men’s gold medal match. Both teams traded the lead up until 12 all after 13 ends, Pialba then won the next five ends to make a break and only lost one more end for the match to win by 8 shots.

Claire and Lynsey defeated Bargara’s Sandra Burgess and Adele Pershouse 23-18 to win the women’s title. The Club Tweed pair went out to an 11-0 lead at the start with the Bargara’s girls holding their own for the rest of the game but unable to peg them back. Claire and Lynsey are a formidable pairing having recently won the Australian Pairs Championship in Perth and also this year’s State Pairs Title to qualify for the Australian event.

Well done to Club Kawana and Bargara on reaching the finals and taking home Silver.

Algester’s Martin Carloss & Glen Pitts took out Bronze in the men’s event 22-19 over Airlie Beach’s Harry Quod & Armando Isgro in an extra end thriller.

Maryborough’s Christine Murdoch & Leanne Gundry won the battle for Bronze in the women’s event 20-15 over Algester’s Teresa Smedley & Marivic Hamilton-Sparkes.

Thank you to event sponsors: Mackay Regional Council, BIOScapes, Souths Leagues Club and Key Solutions Group. Thank you to Souths Suburban Bowls Club for hosting another great event.

The Singles event starting tomorrow is headlined by Algester’s Glen Pitts who is back trying to defend his title, and 2019 & 2020 Women’s Champion Chloe Stewart from Club Tweed who is back looking for a third title. Glen recently won Bronze in the Australian Champion of Champion Singles in Perth. Glen and six other players from today’s pairs event will back up in the singles, a great feat to win through in multiple events.
