Chloe Stewart & Jacob Nelson win Champion of Champion Singles GOLD

by Bowls QLD

At Souths Suburban Bowls Club, Mackay

Club Tweed’s Chloe Stewart and Belmont Services’ Jacob Nelson have taken out the blue-ribbon QLD State Champion of Champion Singles titles at Souths Suburban Bowls Club in Mackay today.

Chloe defeated Nicole Williams from Boonooroo Sandy Straits 25-18 in the Gold Medal play-off. Nicole took an early lead of 6-4 until Chloe started to make her move, scoring 4 shots on one end to take the lead 8-6. Chloe then maintained a small break for the next stage of the game to lead 20-15 with Nicole fighting gallantly to keep in touch. With quality bowls from both players for the remainder of the game, Chloe finished off the stronger to win her third State Champion of Champion Singles title after winning in 2019 & 2020.

Jacob Nelson overcame Pialba’s Nic Gosley 25-22 to win his first State Champion of Champion event. Jacob looked to be cruising at 14-4 and then again at 18-9 up until Nic staged a remarkable comeback to reduce the margin to 1 shot and trail 21-20. The pair traded blows for the next few ends with Jacob leading 23-22 before finishing off the stronger to win by 3 shots. Another quality game impressing the many spectators at the event.

Chloe and Jacob will now advance to the 2024 Australian Champion of Champion Singles play-offs, with the winners from that event advancing to the World Champion of Champions the following year.

Well done to Nicole and Nic on reaching the finals and taking home Silver. Nic achieved a rare feat of making the State Finals in Singles, Pairs and Fours in this year’s Champion of Champions, winning Gold in the Pairs and fourth in the Fours.

Vicki Cameron from North Ipswich took out Bronze in the Women’s event 25-15 over Noorla’s Carmen Mugica.

Mt Isa’s Duane Cahill won the battle for Bronze in the Men’s event 25-23 in a tight tussle with 2022 Champion Glen Pitts from Algester.
