QLD Junior Pairs Champions Crowned
Our first medallists of the 2024 QLD Junior State Championships have been crowned in Under 18 & Under 15 Open Pairs at the Burnett Bowls Club in Bundaberg.
Congratulations to Under 18 Gold Medallists Sam Collier & Stella Palmer and Under 15 Gold Medallists Marley Peters & Cooper Sutton. Four Medal rounds were contested with one shot the difference in three of the games, a credit to all players on the quality of bowls and sportsmanship displayed.
Sam and Stella staged a remarkable comeback in the Under 18 Final to overcome defending champions Todd Brain and Jack Chirgwin by 1 shot. Todd and Jack led 9-2 after 8 ends until a magnificent conversion from Stella with her last bowl claimed a full count of 6 shots. Sam and Stella then won the next 4 ends to lead 13-9 after 13 ends of the 18-end game. Todd and Jack bounced back to win the next 4 ends to lead by 1 going into the last end. Sam and Stella steadied and picked up the two shots required on the last end to win the Gold by 1 shot, their first QLD U18 Pairs Title.
After a close battle throughout the match for Bronze, Rhys Gillman and Riley Gerick snuck away at the end of the game to defeat Corey Marshall and Trent Brehmer by 6 shots.
There was another thrilling finish in the Under 15 Final with Marley Peters and Cooper Sutton defeating Thomas Brehmer and Ben Harrison by 1 shot to win the Gold. Marley and Cooper led 12-6 after 10 ends until a fight back from Thomas and Ben saw the scores draw level at 15 all after 13 ends and 16 all after 15 ends. Marley and Cooper then picked up 3 shots and kept the deficit to 1 shot on each of the remaining two ends to claim the Gold, their first QLD U15 Pairs Title.
The Bronze Medal play off was also an exciting finish with Cade & Shae Daly winning by 1 shot over Eric Masen & Nic Marinelli.
