Gold Coast Clubs Reign Supreme at State Pennant Finals
The 2025 Queensland State Pennant Finals brought the best performing clubs in the state together at Club Tweed where eight group winners in both the men’s and women’s competitions earned their way to the finals after months of competition across their respective districts and zones. From the Far North right through to Maranoa-Warrego, and into metropolitan Brisbane, clubs fought hard all season to qualify for this stage. The quality on display reflected exactly why Pennant continues to hold such significance for bowlers at every level in Queensland.
Men’s Division
The men’s field included TJT which was a composite of Tara, Jandowae and Taroom, Club Pine Rivers, Broadbeach Bulls, Edge Hill Cairns, Drayton Bowls Club, Souths Suburban Bowls Club, Pialba Bowls Club and Diggers Memorial.
Section 1 proved to be an impressive clinic from the Broadbeach Bulls who showed confidence and control from start to finish. They opened their campaign with a strong win over 2-time defending champions Pine Rivers 68 to 54. The Bulls followed that with a commanding 71 to 38 result over Digger Memorial. Their final sectional game was their tightest but they still closed it out 59 to 50 against Edge Hill. Broadbeach finished undefeated and earned the first position in the grand final.
Section 2 was hotly contested and produced some of the closest results of the entire finals series. Drayton had to fight from the very first end of their opening match against Pialba which finished 61 to 60. That tight escape seemed to settle them because they caught fire for the remainder of section play. Drayton went on to claim a convincing 74 to 47 win over TJT then completed their run with a 67 to 49 victory against Souths Suburban. That perfect record put the Darling Downs club into the title match.
The grand final between Broadbeach Bulls and Drayton was expected to be a tactical arm wrestle. Instead Broadbeach backed up their sectional form and tightened the screws from early ends. Broadbeach took their chances and kept building pressure. It resulted in a comprehensive 71 to 48 final scoreline to secure the 2025 Queensland State Pennant title.
Women’s Division
The women’s lineup showcased an equally broad mix of talent with Club Helensvale, Wangaratta Bowls Club, Urangan Bowls Club, Algester Bowls Club, the Northern Suburbs and St Lucia composite side, North Mackay Bowls Club, Cunnamulla Bowls Club and Bargara Bowls Club representing their fellow club mates proudly.
Section 1 belonged to Club Helensvale. They produced three emphatic wins and set the tone from the very first round. Helensvale defeated Cunnamulla 67 to 25 then went on to defeat the Northern Suburbs and St Lucia composite by 61 to 18. Their last sectional match delivered another statement result, defeating North Mackay 63 to 23. Helensvale marched into the grand final looking like the team to beat.
Section 2 was a far tighter affair but Algester found the consistency they needed. They started with a polished 44 to 23 win against Urangan. Their second match was their biggest margin where they overwhelmed Wangaratta 61 to 29. The final match against Bargara was their closest but Algester handled the big points when required, winning 43 to 36 to claim the section undefeated.
The final between Helensvale and Algester lived up to its billing. Both clubs exchanged momentum but Helensvale produced the more decisive ends in the back third. The Hawks secured the State Pennant crown 44 to 38.
