Bowls Queensland Appoints Regional Participation Project Contractor
Bowls Queensland is pleased to announce the appointment of David Barnes as the contractor to lead our statewide Participation Growth Project, following our successful application for a grant from the Queensland Government. This grant will support our ongoing commitment to increasing participation in bowls across regional Queensland and connecting more people with our sport.
David, a former Bowls Australia Club Support Manager, will deliver the project through to 30 June 2026.
About the Project
The project will support approximately 50 regional clubs across Queensland through a structured program of participation initiatives designed to grow engagement, increase diversity, and strengthen club sustainability.
Key project activities include:
- Delivering new participation opportunities in multiple regional locations.
- Providing face-to-face and virtual support to clubs to increase local participation.
- David will attend three regional participation forums conducted by Bowls Queensland.
- Working with clubs to implement inclusive initiatives, such as barefoot bowls, open days, bring-a-friend/relative events, disability days and school programs etc.
- Encouraging adoption of retention-focused formats, including corporate bowls, business house bowls and Jack Attack style social formats.
- Sharing success stories and best-practice models drawn from clubs across Queensland.
Strengthening Clubs and Communities
This initiative directly aligns with Bowls Queensland’s strategic objective:
“To connect more people with bowls in more ways – more often.”
The project will assist clubs to attract new participants, convert casual bowlers into returning players, and encourage long-term membership. It will support local communities by providing opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to engage in a healthy, social and inclusive activity.
Bowls Queensland’s Communications & Marketing Manager, Brendan Wilson, will assist clubs by developing marketing materials and promotional support tailored to local needs.
Next Steps
Bowls Queensland will work closely with David, clubs and districts as the Participation Growth Project is implemented across the state. Further information, including scheduling and club engagement processes, will be provided directly to regional clubs by David Barnes.
Together, we look forward to creating new opportunities for Queenslanders to discover and enjoy the benefits of bowls.
