Bulls Run Rampant in State Triples Finals
The Broadbeach Bulls stamped their authority on the 2026 Bowls Queensland State Championships Open Triples, claiming gold in both the Men’s and Women’s events at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club on 14-15 May, in a remarkable display of club dominance on the state stage.
Women’s Open Triples
Karen Goldsworthy, Julie Keegan and Bolivia Millerick claimed the Women’s Open Triples title with a commanding 21-14 victory over Reese Finn-Young, Candice Ayton and Pamela Rowe in the Gold Medal playoff at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club.
For Millerick, the gold was the second of her week, having already claimed the Mixed Pairs title alongside Kane Nelson days earlier. It was a stunning individual performance across two disciplines, and a fitting reward for one of the standout performers of the entire championship.
The Goldsworthy-led side were impressive throughout, accounting for Kate Leverton, Betty Nicolle and Wendy Jones in the quarter-finals before a dominant 23-10 semi-final win over Fiona Dowling, Sharon Weatherby and Tara Ferrier set up their shot at gold.
Finn-Young, Ayton and Rowe were worthy finalists, overcoming Angela Francis, Dale Rayner and Bronwyn Stevens in a tight 16-14 semi-final after a big quarter-final win over Lacey Gerick, Debbie Dalliston and Fay Whittaker.
The bronze medal went to Francis, Rayner and Stevens, who bounced back to defeat Dowling, Weatherby and Ferrier 19-18 in one of the tightest matches of the entire event.
Men’s Open Triples
In a fitting finale to the triples championships, the Men’s Gold Medal playoff turned into an all-Broadbeach Bulls affair, with Tom Nathan, Tom Taiaroa and Wilson Alexander defeating club teammates Brad Lawson, Sean Ingham and Jarryd Davies 19-13 to claim the title.
It was a maiden state championship gold medal for all three members of the winning side, and a moment that will live long in the memory for Nathan, Taiaroa and Alexander, who were composed and clinical throughout the back end of the draw.
Their route to gold included a strong 25-12 semi-final win over Paul Webb, Daniel Knight and Tony White, who had earlier knocked out Grant Edmonds, Steve Lane and Rick Dunn in the quarter-finals.
Lawson, Ingham and Davies were deserving finalists. Their quarter-final win over home-green heavyweights Hayden Oster, Sean Baker and Ryan Bester was one of the standout results of the tournament, before a 20-17 semi-final victory over 2024 Men’s Triples Champions Roger Stevens, Dean Drummond and Peter Brown earned them their place in the gold medal match.
The bronze medal went to Stevens, Drummond and Brown, who recovered well to defeat Webb, Knight and White 19-11 in a composed playoff performance.
