2013 State Champion of Club Champions State Champion of Club Champions Fours winners for 2013 are Club Helensvale (Women) and Wynnum-Manly (Men).
WOMEN
Club Helensvale women were outstanding from the start of the comp at Broadbeach Bowls Club, not surprising given their star lineup of Shahn Griffiths, Teresa Armitage, Pam Rowe and Lynsey Clarke, along with coach Brett Wilkie.
They defeated Clermont in the opening round 23-17, Ferny Grove 17-14 and Coolum Beach, a surprisingly easy 26-9 victory.
As winners of section 1, Helensvale were to line up in the final against Club Pine Rivers, winners of section 2.
Unlike Club Helensvale, Club Pine Rivers had an upset on their way to securing their finals berth.
After comfortable wins against Millmerran 34-7 and Bundaberg Brothers 23-14, West Cairns upset the applecart by beating Club Pine Rivers, 29-21 in the final sectional round.
However, it wasn’t enough though for West Cairns to unseat Pine Rivers from top of the section table, and Club Pine Rivers took its place against Club Helensvale to play for the honour of being Queensland’s best club women’s four.
The final went Club Helensvale’s way 25-8, skip Lynsey Clarke having everything she touched turn to gold.
MEN
In the men’s comp, Wynnum-Manly got into the final by finishing top of the section 1 table, winning against Mackay City 27-14, Gayndah 18-16 and Mermaid Beach 26-23.
Runner-up Thuringowa finished top of the section 2 table, beating Banyo 19-18, Laidley 25-18 and Elliott Heads 27-7.
The final went Wynnum-Manly’s way 22-14, the lads in red more consistent and taking advantage of every opportunity that presented.
However Thuringowa were happy with the runner-up title, very pleased to make a state final against such tough opposition.
