District dogfight heats up
Just four teams from 22 remain undefeated after Day 1 on the Gold Coast Just four of Queensland’s 22 district teams have come through Day 1 of the men’s District Sides Championships with a clean bill of health.
Among the undefeated are three competition heavyweights, Gold Coast A, Gateway and Cunningham, and a dark horse for this year’s title, Bundaberg.
The Bundy boys, who have a point to prove in their first outing at District Sides since splitting with Port Curtis, topped off a perfect Day 1 with victory over reigning champs Brisbane North, 64-54.
The win, which comes on the back of victories over Caboolture, 72-46, and Tropical Far North, 69-63, will give Bundaberg a huge boost heading into Day 2.
And with Maranoa/Warrego, North West Qld and Mackay on the cards tomorrow, the mountain men will be quietly confident of finishing Day 2 undefeated.
After getting off to a winning start in Round 1, Port Curtis slipped up after lunch, dropping their Round 2 clash with Brisbane, 48-64.
They were back on track this afternoon, despatching Leichhardt 77-48. However, their real test will come tomorrow, with Cunningham and Sunshine Coast looming in rounds 6 and 7.
Cunningham hit the ground running in Round 1, edging a four-shot win over Sunshine Coast, 60-54.
They remained undefeated, beating Burnett 93-60 and Fraser Coast 76-49.
The Sunny Coast boys also won rounds two and three, but they’ll be kicking themselves for slipping up in the championship opener.
It was a relatively cruisy day for powerhouse side Gold Coast-Tweed’s A-team today.
Playing on home turf, the Goldie boys hammered Southern Downs, 101-37, before clocking up a massive 99-shot win over Maranoa/Warrego, 137-38.
Downs offered a lot stiffer resistance, but ultimately failed to overcome the competition favourites, going down 64-75.
Meanwhile, Condamine (49-93), Central Qld (73-46) and North Qld (58-75) all fell in the face of Gateway’s Day 1 assault.
Action continues at Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach bowls clubs tomorrow, with Round 4 kicking off at 9am.
