Sue’s girls run true to form

by admin on October 17, 2014

Sue McKenzie from Broadbeach has form!  She’s skipped her Broadbeach girls to two recent Queensland Champion of Club Champion fours titles, in 2012 and 2013. Broadbeach women are on target again in 2014. They’re the best club fours in the state so it’s not surprising most of the scoring was tight in the opening round of the 2014 BQ State Champion of Club Champion fours play-offs, this weekend at Toombul Bowls Club.
There were only two “easy” games in Round One this morning, one for the girls and one for the boys.
Sue McKenzie’s Broadbeach girls, going for their third title in four years, were impressive against Val Mahony’s North Toowoomba girls, more than doubling their shot count, 31-13.
It was clear the Gold Coast Tweed reps are used to big pressure bowls, Sue confident in her side of Anne McClure lead, state selector Gail Waitai second, state team manager and Over 60s rep Chrissie Pavlov third.
(Sue and Chrissie know each other’s bowls well, having previously won an Over 60s Australian Champion of Champion pairs title together.)
Playing for Val was lead Pai Graham, second Lyn Gray and third Theresa Thomas.
The other easy win in Round One went to Darrren McCracken’s Across the Waves (Bundaberg) boys, a blistering opening round against Mick Mill’s boys from Stanthorpe (Southern Downs), 27-13.
Of course, Darren could count on an in-form duo in his side, former Tantitha poster-boys Steve McNamee and Jason Andrewartha, fresh from scooping up 2014 Australian Champion of Champion Pairs glory just a few days ago at Taren Point (NSW).
The fourth member of the impressive Across the Waves rink was Brian McMah.
Playing for Stanthorpe skip Mick Mills was Brian Brown, Robert Alcock and Frank Taylor.
The other matches this morning were much tighter, as you’d expect in a state final.
For the men, Jubilee Townsville (Grp 8) defeated Windsor (Grp 2) by ONE SHOT, 23-22.
Des Cann’s Jindalee boys (Grp 1) DREW 17-17 with Anthony William’s boys from Maryborough Services (Grp 5).
(BYE for Steve Tong’s boys, Grp 4 Hamilton. No Grp 7 rep side playing today.)
For the women, Sue Bond’s Ferny Grove four (Grp 2) defeated Shirley Sampson’s Marlin Coast outfit fairly comfortably, 25-16.
Nola Darlington’s Binjour girls (Grp 5) were relieved with their four shot win 20-16 over Jeanette Sauer’s Kallangur girls (Grp 4).
There was only ONE SHOT between Janice Anderson’s Emerald girls (Grp 7) against Eleanor Batts’ Yeppoon girls (Grp 6 Central Queensland), 17-16.
Round Two is underway now.
Round Three will be played tomorrow morning (Sunday Oct 19), starting 8.30am.
The men’s and women’s state final is scheduled to begin at 12.30pm.
