Cunningham’s Jamie Smith dashed Bundaberg’s chances of a clear win and two valuable championship points in Round One of the 2014 District Sides Finals at Broadbeach Bowls Club.
The cruel final blow moved the kitty back 6cm and took Cunningham from one shot down to four shots up, after the bell
The result of that bowl was a 47-47 draw.
“We should have won that one,” Bundaberg’s Jim See said.
“Round Two will be our “final”, against Gold Coast, we should have won against Cunningham and Sunshine Coast anyway.
“If we survive this one, then we get Sunshine Coast in the official final.”
In other Division One, Round One, results, Gold Coast Tweed went up 6-8 shots early on and maintained the lead to the end.
No matter how good the Sunshine Coast was, Gold Coast Tweed answered back, for a 58-53 host district win.
In the Women’s Division One finals, Round One, Cunningham girls didn’t have a Jamie Smith-escape card, never looking like winning against a tight Bundaberg side, 54-41.
“The girls were a bit flat out there, we can play much better, and hopefully we will in Round Two, against Mackay,” manager Betty Goodwin said.
Sunshine Coast girls were very happy with their win over Mackay 51-41.
“We didn’t make any great strides, it was close, but we just managed to stay ahead,” manager Margaret Vincent said.
Sunshine Coast rink wins were 18-16, 14-12, 19-13 against Mackay.
Reigning state singles champion Marilyn Emmerton from Mooloolaba club has had a stunning run through District Sides for Sunshine Coast, 9 wins and 1 draw out of 10 games, including her latest rink win against Bundaberg’s Robyn Devereux, 14-12.
