Brighton to defend Bluewater title at home
Bowls is part of the week-long Bluewater Festival celebrations, which culminates in the start of the annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. The Bluewater Festival Bowls Classic will be held at defending champion Brighton’s home green (147 Northcote Street) on Sunday March 29.
The annual Fours event is for both honour and showcase reasons, with teams from Sandgate, Brighton and Eventide Bowls Clubs lined up in a spirit of friendly rivalry.
Members from other clubs are invited to drop in and have a look at the tournament, and there will also be a green available for a free roll-up for members of the public wanting to give bowls at Brighton a try!
“The Bluewater Bowls Classic is a great social day, with the atmosphere growing each year, and all three of the clubs competing want to win and take the trophy home for the year,” Brighton Bowls Club president Ken McLean said.
“We also see a growing number of people down for the Festival coming to have a try at lawn bowls, and we are happy to show them what to do.
“In terms of a sport, there’s no other like it, no matter how old or how young you are, it’s all about precision and skill, a great low-impact sport and a great way to get out, meet new people and socialise.”

The 2015 Bluewater Festival kicks off on Friday March 27 with the launch of a photo and art exhibition, and culminates one week later on Good Friday (Friday April 3), when visitors watch the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race from their waterfront seat at Shorncliffe’s Moora Park.
BLUEWATER FESTIVAL 2015 (Friday March 27 – Friday April 3)
The main day of the annual Bluewater Festival is Good Friday (April 3), when thousands of visitors come to Bramble Bay, Shorncliffe.
They come to take advantage of the best waterfront views for the start of Australia’s second biggest yacht race, the “Qantaslink Brisbant to Gladstone”.
You get a ringside view of the start of the yachtrace from the Bluewater Festival location, Moora Park, while enjoying market stalls, carnival rides, gourmet food vendors, and a great line up of free entertainment.
“One of the most popular events of the festival is the Bluewater ‘Bayfire’ Night (Thursday April 2), where the skies over Bramble Bay, Shorncliffe, and Sandgate explode with colourful fireworks, and friends and family flock to the foreshore to enjoy the Festival attractions and atmosphere,” Bluewater Festival 2015 marketing and media coordinator Melinda Kerr said.
“This year the Bluewater Festival officially starts on Friday March 27 with the launch of the Bluewater Photography & Digital Art Exhibition and the Bluewater Festival 4017 Bayside Art Trail launch.
“St Patricks College Shorncliffe, will again be transformed into a creative hub housing the Bluewater Art Exhibition Opening Night to coincide with ‘Bayfire’ night (Thursday April 2).
“The Bluewater Bowls Classic is back this year being hosted by Brighton Bowls club on March 29.
“And Einbupin Lagoon, Sandgate will be transformed into a Twilight Cinema for this year’s FREE family movie ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’, on Wednesday April 1.”
The Bluewater Festival is easily accessible by public transport with Brisbane City Council buses running regularly and Queensland Rail stations Shorncliffe and Sandgate, a short walk away.
(Due to the renovation of the Shorncliffe Pier, this year’s Bluewater Festivals entertainment stage and stalls will be situated in Upper Moora Park, with only children’s entertainment situated in Lower Moora Park.
For Festival Goers wishing to pack a picnic please be advised that due to health and safety reasons the barbeques in Upper and Lower Moora Park will be switched off on the key festival dates, Thursday April 2 and Friday April 3.)
