Queensland claim overall honours
Maroons named best performed state at national championships They didn’t take the boys title, or girls titles, but an impressive tally of one gold, five silver and one bronze, was more than enough to earn Queensland the overall honours at this year’s Australian Under-18 Championships.
The Maroons consistency over four days was rewarded with the coveted trophy at Darwin’s Nightcliff Bowls Club.
“We came here hoping to do our best and take home some silverware, we achieved that and more, so overall it has been a pretty good championships for us,” state coach Bill Cornehls said.
“A couple more gold would have been nice, but all in all I think we can be extremely proud of what we did at these championships.
“The players went out there and put everything they had into every game and in the end they got rewarded for their effort.
“No player is going home empty-handed, every player has a medal, which is something not a lot of other states can say.
“Personally I’m extremely happy with the team. They played their hearts out, were there for each other as a group and really did themselves and their state proud.
“We’ve been going through a bit of a transition period in Queensland’s junior ranks recently, but I think we’re starting to get a really good group of players together and they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future…actually, they already are!”
